Public Health Optometrist

Dr. Pearce provides full-scope optometric care in Portland, Oregon at Kaiser Permanente. He is a non-clinical partner at You & Eye, a private optometric practice in West Linn, Oregon.
He received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Alberta, his Doctor of Optometry from Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon, his Master of Public Health from Emory University, and his Doctor of Public Health from the University of Hawaii, Manoa.
Much of his professional career has been spent teaching and researching eye care in the developing world. He has particular interest in the intersection of health systems-strengthening and non-governmental organizations, as well as the training and support of mid-level eye care providers.

Areas of Interest
Research
Dr. Pearce has conducted and published research on a variety of public health topics. His primary research interests include the role of mid-level eye care providers in the developing world, eye care pedagogy, the intersection of nongovernmental organizations and health systems strengthening as they relate to eye care in the developing world, cultural humility in eye care, and the role of optometrists in addressing systemic health conditions.
Education
Dr. Pearce enjoys teaching, mentoring, and supporting mid-level eye care providers in the developing world, as well as providing continuing education to western optometrists. He has taught mid-level eye care providers in the South Pacific and Thailand, he has taught optometry students in Palestine and the US, and has provided continuing education lectures around the world.
Direct patient care
Dr. Pearce provides full-scope optometric care in an HMO setting in Portland, Oregon. He particularly enjoys seeing patients with limited English proficiency, and patients who are mentally or physically challenged.
